A well-maintained lawn gives your house an inviting look and plays an important role in increasing its curb appeal. Which means maintaining it in top-top condition is an absolute must. However, what we see most of the time is people either undercaring or, sometimes, overcaring for their lawn (yup, that’s a thing).

This ultimately results in a patchy, weed-infested, and discolored lawn  that looks like an absolute abomination. You don’t want that, and neither do we! And that’s why we have compiled a list of some of the most common mistakes people make while caring for their lawn care that you need to avoid. If your lawn feels off, there’s a good chance you might be making those mistakes. 😉

Here’s What to Avoid to Have an Amazing Lawn This Spring:

  1. Underfeeding your lawn

Well, it goes without saying that your lawn, just like your plants, requires a lot of resources to grow throughout the seasons, especially when it’s spring. This means timely fertilization is vital. Skimp on it even once, and you’re going to get a patchy lawn with a bad look, even worsened by all the weeds growing up in between. We would highly recommend feeding your lawn 4 times a year, ideally at the start of each season, to ensure your lawn care remains lush, green, and fresh.

  1. Not watering the right way

Not watering the right way? Is that a thing? Well, you’ll be flabbergasted by how technical it can get to just water the grass. The easiest way to water your lawn care is to water it infrequently for at least 40 minutes, 4 days a week. In rainy weather, you can tone down on the frequency a little bit. For example, if it rains all day, you can skip watering. But if it’s not raining too much and you’re still giving your garden a 15-minute sprinkle, that’s not ok.

  1. Mowing the grass too short

Grass blades grow in proportion to their roots. By cutting the blades too short, most of the energy will be invested in growing them back, which will hamper the roots growth. Consequently, the roots will remain shallow, and the grass will eventually thin outl due to weak roots, giving space for weeds to grow in between. This is why it is recommended to cut the roots no more than ⅓ of the total length of the grass for a healthy, weed-free lawn.

  1. Not paying much attention to the weeds

A lot of times when we see a single weed, we don’t pay much heed and just let it grow, thinking a single weed won’t cause much harm anyway. But have you ever thought about the number of seeds that this single weed can spread in your lawn? That’s why it is recommended to kill the weeds as soon as they appear in your lawn. If you want to double down on your weed prevention efforts, you can also go for feeds that kill weeds as well as feed the grass.

  1. Applying too much fertilizer

Remember when we mentioned overcaring for your lawn? This is actually it—applying too much fertilizer! It causes the grass to grow too quickly. This rapid growth results in weak grass, leaving it susceptible to different kinds of pests and diseases. The best way to use a fertilizer is as per the recommended limits for a specific area. This way, you ensure your lawn remains healthy and appealing throughout the year without any problems.

  1. Ignoring soil testing

If you don’t test your soil, you won’t know what it needs for it to support healthy growth of your lawn. The mistake that most people make is not testing it, failing to make the most out of the soil. We highly recommend testing your soil on a regular basis to ensure you optimally amend it by adding essential materials in which it is deficient.

  1. Not aerating the soil

For those who are not experienced enough with caring for their lawn, aeration is basically creating small holes in your lawn to allow air, water, and essential minerals to enter the soil effectively. It ensures that the soil remains as fertile as it can be, keeping the plants nourished throughout the seasons.

  1. Treating all areas the same

Well, this might be the first time you’re hearing this, but treating all areas of your lawn the same is not something you should be doing. Look for areas that are more exposed to the sun and make sure to water them more often compared to areas that are not as exposed. The same logic applies to applying fertilizer as well. Catering to the unique needs of each area ensures your lawn’s color and growth are even, giving off a lush look that adorns your use.

  1. Using dull blades for mowing

Dull blades don’t cut your grass. They tear it. This not only makes your lawn look unattractive but also makes it extremely susceptible to catching different diseases and pests, causing more harm than benefit and doing permanent damage to your grass. Therefore, never ever forget to sharpen your blades before mowing. Paying attention to this little detail will go a long way as far as your lawn’s health is concerned.

  1. Watering too much

Earlier, we talked about not watering the right way. Well, consider this point as an extension of that. We recommended infrequent watering, 40 minutes each. However, extend that time limit and you’ll be dealing with a lot of fungal growth, making your grass susceptible to wilting, discoloration, and even dead spots. Infrequent deep watering should be just enough for your lawn to stay healthy.

Conclusion

Maintaining an attractive lawn care is more than just daily watering. It requires extreme attention to detail and looking after every small nuance for your lawn to stay healthy, vibrant, and just generally beautiful. By avoiding the above 10 mistakes, you are ensuring your lawn not just looks exquisite but also remains healthy throughout every season, whether it’s the blooming spring, scorching summer, dry autumn, or cold winter. Believe us, your neighbors are going to envy your lawn by just avoiding these simple mistakes. Try for yourself to find out! 😉
